More than 1.2 billion people around the world live without electricity. The traditional utility approach to providing electricity using central generation, transmission and distribution is expensive. The World Bank estimates that it will take a trillion dollars through 2030 to solve this energy poverty. There is no economic model that will support this level of investment.
This paper presents the results of the work conducted in cooperation with ANAS, which is in charge of the Italian road and highway network of national interest. The cooperation also is framed into the Italian Technical Committee on Strategic Theme 4 — Infrastructure for the specific topic of “Balancing of environmental and engineering aspects in management of road networks.” The paper presents an...
Energy management is not only an efficient tool to overcome the energy shortage but also plays a vital in moving towards the trend of green concept by reducing carbon credit. Demand side management techniques seem a key to catch up these energy crises in all sectors. Demand and supply gap is widening and it could be reduced through addition of generation capacity or manipulating electricity demand...
Global warming, pollution and sky racketing prices of the conventional energy sources have put the governments and the power industries under and increasing pressure to invest in the renewable energy sources. In Lebanon, the demand for electric power is growing year after year, taking into consideration that the imported fossil fuel is used in the generation of about 90% of the needed power and the...
This paper describes efforts by the IEEE PES Community Solutions Initiative (CSI) to provide reliable electricity to the 1.6 billion low income people who do not have access to electric light. The Community Solutions Initiative is a virtual community of professionals from a wide variety of backgrounds who are providing largely pro-bono efforts to design, develop, deliver and promote sustainable energy...
To achieve the objective set by European Union to reduce the energy consumption of buildings by the year 2020, effective measures for increasing energy efficiency have to be implemented. Improving energy efficiency in schools does not mean compromising the comfort of staff and students. Implementing some simple energy saving measures can improve conditions, as well as save money. The aim of this paper...
An experiment is presented that uses solar direct current (DC) in an AC mains powered 48 V DC power grid to reduce the AC power consumption of lighting systems in professional buildings. Measured annual AC mains power has been reduced by 15 % for lighting systems with a combined DC solar and AC mains supply compared with a pure AC mains supplied lighting reference system.
By the recent trends the households have a lot of intelligent, programmable electricity consumer devices and some generation units as PV too. The new network structure of the residential inhouse power systems suits to the requirement of the security, autonomy, renewable generation and economy. This suppose a parallel DC network that get directly the PV generation, stores that, supplies the LED lighting...
This paper models the case of a new construction 277 V commercial lighting system, one of the many possible applications of a DC distribution system, using fluorescent and LED fixtures in a conventional AC circuit and in a DC lighting circuit. The levelized cost of lighting for the AC fluorescent, DC fluorescent, AC LED, and DC LED cases are calculated for projected LED and solar PV performance parameters,...
Rising demand with diminishing reserves of oil and gas spread the energy crisis all over the world. Renewable energy and efficiency technology are the keys to resolve the energy crisis. As the improvement in luminous efficacy, LEDs have been an energy-saving choice for general illumination and road lighting. This paper made a comparison between LEDs system and HPS system for road lighting to evaluate...
