Increasing energy consumption associated with environmental restriction and economic issues imposed while building new transmission lines and power generation centers, resulted in the need of improvement of the existent power transmission systems. The solution in optimization of transmission capacity is the use of devices based on power electronics known as Flexible Alternate Current Transmission Systems (FACTS). The use of FACTS is well known because it provides a lot of benefits to improve the power transfer capacity in transmission lines, as well as power system stability. The simplest and most cost-effective type of FACTS is peovided by Fixed Series Compensation (FSC). This paper will present the main dimensioning aspects of FSCs installed on the Mato Grosso State Transmission System (ELETRONORTE Power Transmission Utility - Brazil) at Barra do Peixe 230 kV Substation, nowadays in commercial operation. The paper will present an overview of the FSCs design philosophy and components dimensioning, generating high quality and efficient power transmission solutions to the PBrazilian 230 kV Transmission System.
